Audible’s first immersive reimagining of a classic ghost story, pushing forward what audiobooks can sound like.

Unabridged, this version harnesses the power of 3D audio and popular music to create a truly memorable listening experience. The audiobook starts with a specially commissioned reworking of Radiohead’s classic, Street Spirit. The lyrics reflect back the story’s soul and content. The cover immediately makes the audiobook feel contemporary and builds connection, as well as leaving a lasting impression long after the listener has finished the story.

  • "What an incredible piece of theatre, wonderfully set, with just the right amount of background sound effects and beautiful music by Radiohead. The story itself was incredibly well drawn and narrated perfectly. Stunning, haunting, evocative and entertaining. Well done audible."

  • “I have been listening to audiobooks for more than 40 years, and I never imagined they would ever be mixed in - or even need - Dolby Atmos. This was a fantastic experience, from the great narrator and well-written story to the ambient sounds that scared me a couple of times when walking around town, thinking the sounds were real. Highly recommended.”

    Klauss, Audible Reviewer

  • "The sound design and production makes all the difference! More audio books need to be made in 3D audio (although you need the right headphones to get the best experience). It will be hard going back to normal sounding audiobooks after listening to something of this quality."

    M. Dasani, Audible Reviewer

  • "Brilliantly written story with the innocence of the age Excellent sound effects and atmospheric music bring the story to life Beautifully narrated Paapa Essiedu is totally believable as the main character. Awesome. Will be difficult to beat."

The challenge was to set this version apart from other adaptations

The Woman In Black follows Arthur Kipps, a junior lawyer, who ventures deep into English countryside to attend the funeral of Mrs Drablow. Written in 1983, Susan Hill’s classic ghost story has already been adapted for TV, film and is one of the UK’s most popular theatre productions. It’s even studied in schools.

We designed binaural soundscapes with the music, shepard tone drones and SFX to create a mysterious, terrifying and “chill down the back of the neck” immersive audio experience.

Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Lazarus Project, Gangs Of London, Capture) performing at Audible Studios and directed by Ella Watts (Doctor Who Redacted, Eliza)

The production picked up two nods from the UK ARIAS for Best Innovation and Best Audiobook.
